Have you ever thought that you weren’t good enough to help others in their walk with God?
If so, I have a story for you! A story about someone I met, who quickly became a friend of mine. A story about a new Christian brother who had just recently turned away from a life of drugs, who had some questionable theology but a teachable heart.
We spent hours talking about various theological issues, for example the problem of evil/suffering.
One of the verses I encouraged him to memorize was Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Then, my teaching position at the school I worked at was put in jeopardy. I shared with this young man that I might lose my job soon. This beautiful tale of redemption and sanctification, what would become of it? Where could he turn to for help and advice about life, about his walk with the Lord? Why was this happening? The truth is, God was in control. While this situation looked like a mess, He was in the middle of doing something good. After all, the good work He began in this young man, He will bring to completion (Philippians 1:6).
After my first meeting with the principal, this youth waited patiently for the news. I told him I would find out later, to which he said, “It’s all good.”
“Maybe.” I answered.
“No, for sure!” He said adamantly, quickly quoting Romans 8:28 to me.
I could only sheepishly admit that he was right. Quite a delightful surprise!
More meetings with the principal took place and similar conversations would follow. Through the scripture, he encouraged me to have hope, reminding me that God was in control and that it would all work out for good.
Do you love God? Rest assured that everything that happens, will end up for good, no matter how crazy, out of control, or painful it may seem now.
You can make a difference in others’ lives, you don’t need to be perfect to do this. Simply point others toward Christ – through the gospel, through what little or many truths you know of God.
What do you know? You know that He is loving, He is good, He is kind, He is forgiving.
He is in control.
